The Drift | Hedgehog house for small mammals
Perfect to tuck into the quiet edges of your garden, The Drift offers a hidden haven for hedgehogs and other small mammals. Open-fronted with a tunnelled entrance, it leads to a sheltered inner chamber; exactly the kind of space a hedgehog seeks when the seasons turn cold. With its deep green finish and low, solid form, The Drift is easy to tuck beneath shrubs or alongside a fence, quietly working to protect one of Britain’s best-loved creatures.
Why you’ll love it
- Open-fronted tunnel-style entrance leads to a safe, secluded hibernation chamber
- Hand-painted in a rich green powder-coated finish that settles into the garden
- Designed by RIBA-accredited architects with hedgehog safety in mind
- Handcrafted in the UK from FSC®-certified plywood that’s both tough and kind to the planet
- Gives hedgehogs the quiet, protected space they need to rest and recharge while the low-profile design blends easily into natural cover

Where it works
Place The Drift in a peaceful, shady and flat part of your garden – e.g., against a wall/fence or under a hedge/tree.
A well-drained surface is best, and make sure the opening faces away from cold winds (avoiding north and northeast).
Avoid placing it near food sources that attract predators and try not to disturb the box once it’s in place, especially in winter.
Why it matters
Hedgehog numbers have declined dramatically in recent years, largely due to habitat loss and fragmentation. A well-placed shelter like The Drift offers a safe, undisturbed space to rest, nest and hibernate.
Every BrdBx is handcrafted by RAW Oxford, a social enterprise supporting people who are rebuilding their lives after facing difficult circumstances. By choosing The Drift, you’re offering sanctuary to hedgehogs while supporting meaningful work and a thriving planet. It’s a choice that feels good for your garden, your community and the planet.
