A home for butterflies

Butterfly boxes are best placed in sunny, sheltered locations near nectar-rich plants, at a height of a few feet above the ground. They should be positioned to face away from prevailing winds and ideally towards the north or east to avoid strong sunlight and wettest winds, though some shade is beneficial.

Sunlight and Shelter
Butterflies need both sunlight for warmth and shelter from wind and rain.
A sunny spot that also offers some shade from trees or buildings is ideal.
Avoid placing boxes in direct, intense sunlight for extended periods.
Consider the prevailing wind direction when positioning the box.

Height
Butterfly boxes are generally placed a few feet above the ground, often around 4-6 feet.
Some recommend placing them near the ground, while others suggest higher placement.
The ideal height may depend on the specific garden and the butterflies you are trying to attract.

Orientation
Facing the box towards the north or east is generally recommended to avoid strong sunlight and the wettest winds.
However, if there are trees or buildings providing shade, the box can be placed in other directions.

Proximity to Flowers
Place the box near butterfly-friendly, nectar-rich plants like buddleja (butterfly bush).
This provides a food source for butterflies visiting the box.

Other Considerations
Some suggest adding a layer of bark to the front of the box to make it more appealing.
You can also create a sugar solution to attract butterflies to the box.
While some butterflies overwinter in boxes, they are primarily used for shelter and refuge during the summer months.
